ELL 351 ELL/351 ELL351 Week 3 Assignment Lesson Critique and Plan (Ashford)
Due by Day 7. Lesson Critique and Plan. Read Chapter 4 of Practical Strategies for Teaching English Language Learners.
The Internet is full of teacher resource websites and free lesson plans. Using the Internet, locate one lesson plan that would be appropriate to teach English language learners (ELLs). You will be critiquing this lesson. The following are examples of websites from which you can pull lesson plans:
1. Resources for Educators
2. Classroom Resources
3. ESL Monkeys
(If you are having trouble locating lesson plans, you can also use the recommended resources for this week.)
Go to the How to Develop a Lesson Plan that Includes ELLs webpage, which focuses on how you can develop a lesson plan that includes ELLs. This information will help guide your lesson critique and your planning.
For this assignment, you will complete three parts in which you will critique the lesson, write a new one, and address two statements about the new lesson.
Part One. Based on what you’ve learned so far, evaluate the lesson plan on its overall effectiveness for teaching ELLs. Describe the strengths and weaknesses of the lesson plan. Does the lesson plan have all the necessary components described in Figure 4.3? Does the lesson promote listening and speaking?
Part Two. Think about the modifications you would make to the lesson in order to meet the academic needs of ELLs. Produce a revision of the lesson plan using the template in Figure 4.3. Include the following information in your lesson:
1. Background: grade level, duration, objectives, materials
2. Introduction
3. Formal presentation
4. Guided practice, extension, remedial work
5. Assessment
6. Closing
Part Three. Address the following two statements:
1. Explain how your revised lesson (Part Two) makes the content more comprehensible for your students.
2. Explain how your revised lesson promotes listening and speaking skills.
